GRANITE FALLS, Minn. —A special free movie day at the Millennium Theater in Montevideo will feature two films about memory loss on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. The first film to be shown is “Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory,” a 2014 film. The next film shown will be “Birkey’s Brain,” a new story by Pioneer PBS featuring Dr. Tom Birkey's journey with Alzheimer’s disease and his wife Doris Thompson’s experience as his caregiver.

Showings will be held at 2 and 6 p.m. For more information, contact Gretchen Reeves by calling (320) 226-1313.

“Alive Inside” explores diseases that impair neurological function, such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and tells the story of patients and their experience with music therapy. The film won the Audience Award at the  Sundance Film Festival.

“Birkey’s Brain” was produced at Dr. Birkey’s suggestion after he attended an event sponsored by the Montevideo Area Memory Loss Network (MAMLN). Birkey is a long-time family physician who has served Montevideo for more than 50 years.

“Dr. Birkey was interested in removing the social stigma surrounding Alzheimer's,” explained Pioneer PBS Compass Producer Amanda Anderson. “Tom and Doris allowed me to come to their home several times and follow them on their daily routines as we discussed what was happening as they experienced the early stages of the disease,” she added.

“Birkey’s Brain” also features interviews with Gretchen Reeves, a speech pathologist supervisor at CCM Health in Montevideo, who speaks about the networks and services available to help families in need of memory care support.

Dr. Birkey and Doris will be present at the event to answer questions in the post-film discussions. The event is being sponsored by MAMLN, The Millennium Theater and Pioneer PBS.
