Sled dogs are part of northern Minnesota's culture, from recreation to racing to working in the wilderness. Ryan Miller of Madison, Minn. relocated to northeast Minnesota to work for the U.S. Forest Service near Ely. After acquiring several sled dogs, he started the company Underdog Sled Dogs, which offers recreational trips. Bret joined Ryan and some friends on a sled dog trip to Burntside Lake where they jigged for lake trout.

Then Bret is at the WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race established in 2008 by the Ely Chamber of Commerce. The race spans 65 miles through northern Minnesota state trails and involves 60 mushers and 400 sled dogs from the Upper Midwest and Canada. Prairie Sportsman also explores how sled dogs play an important role in northern Minnesota’s workforce, such as pulling in supplies for the U.S. Forest Service.
