GRANITE FALLS, Minn. –  On Saturday, October 14, three Pioneer PBS stories received 2023 Upper Midwest Emmy® awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Upper Midwest Chapter. Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death and Into the Storm with Tanner Charles from Pioneer PBS’s Postcards program received awards and Minnesota’s Alt-Meat Revolution: The Great Burger Taste-Off from Pioneer PBS’s Compass program received an award. This is the first time in Pioneer PBS’s history that Compass has received an Upper Midwest Emmy® award.

The Great Burger Taste-Off received an award in the Business/Consumer — Short or Long Form Content category. This episode is part of an on-going project, “Minnesota's Alt-Meat Revolution,” a partnership with GBH’s WORLD and The West Central Tribune. This segment dives into the motivations behind PURIS, the largest processor of yellow pea protein in North America, who now has a presence in Dawson, where they purchased and retrofitted a facility in 2019.

Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death received an award in the Arts & Entertainment — Long Form Content contegory. This 30-minute documentary is named after a poem written by the late prolific poet and essayist Bill Holm. The documentary features Holm’s work set to music in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Into the Storm with Tanner Charles received an award in the Weather — Short or Long Form Content category. Tanner Charles, originally from the small town of Kingston, has been storm chasing for 13 years. He documents the kind of weather that many people wouldn’t dare to get close to – capturing both the fury and the beauty of tornadoes in photos and videos.

Pioneer PBS was nominated for a total of 22 Upper Midwest Emmy® awards. To watch the other nominated stories, visit www.pioneer.org/emmy.

Postcards and Compass are made possible by contributions from the voters of Minnesota through a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and members of Pioneer PBS. These programs are also supported by local sponsorships from Shalom Hill Farm, Explore Alexandria Tourism, Lake Region Arts Council, KRAM 96.7 and Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies.
