GRANITE FALLS, Minn. – Pioneer PBS stories and talent have received 22 nominations for the 2023 Upper Midwest Emmy® awards. Nominated programs are Postcards, Prairie Sportsman and Compass.
Pioneer PBS’s arts, culture and history program, Postcards, received a record-setting 17 nominations. Postcards is produced by Dana Conroy, with videography and editing by Ben Dempcy and Kristofor Gieske. Nominated stories also include editing by Mike Scholtz, animation by Tate Marshall and composition work by Austin Carson.
The nominated stories for the Postcards series are: The State of Polka, When Glitches are Good, Playing Haydn for the Angel of Death, A Blossoming Business, Empress of a Sugary Empire of Joy, Grasshopper Girl: Author Teresa Peterson, Built with Love, Sold! The Story of an Aucioneering Family, Verlyn Kling and the Missing Les Paul, Growing Your Own Way, Fresh-Baked Goodness, The Art of Everyday Living, Vietnam Brotherhood, The Heart of Thunder and Into the Storm with Tanner Charles. Dana Conroy is nominated in the “Director — Short or Long Form Content” category for her work on Built with Love and Kristofor Gieske is nominated in the “Editor — Short or Long Form Content” category.
Pioneer PBS’s sporting, recreation and conservation program, Prairie Sportsman, received two nominations. Prairie Sportsman’s team is Dylan Curfman, producer, videographer and editor; Bret Amundson, host and editor; Cindy Dorn, writer and producer; and Dan Amundson, videographer and editor. The program received a nomination for its segment, Rock Snot Invasion. Bret Amundson also received a nomination in the “Talent — Program Host/Moderator” category.
Pioneer PBS’s public affairs program, Compass, received a record-setting three nominations. Compass is produced, shot and edited by Amanda Anderson with videography and editing by Esmeralda Ziemer. The nominated stories are The Smell of Money and The Great Burger Taste-Off — both stories are part of the on-going project, “Minnesota's Alt-Meat Revolution.” Amanda Anderson is also nominated in the “Multimedia Journalist — No Production Time Limit” category for her work on A coaching dynasty: Celebrating Title IX. This is the first time that Compass has ever received nominations.

The 2023 Upper Midwest Emmy® awards will be presented at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Upper Midwest Chapter gala on Saturday, October 14. This gala marks 24 years of the Upper Midwest Emmy® awards.
