GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — Pioneer PBS’s President and General Manager Shari Lamke has been selected to receive The Kwame McDonald Media Award during the 2023 National Girls & Women in Sports Day - Minnesota on February 1. Lamke was selected based on the work she’s done producing documentaries exploring women and girls in sport.
The award ceremony will take place at noon at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on Wednesday, February 1. Exhibits will open at 11 a.m. and the honoree event will begin at noon. The event is free and open to the public. Livestreaming and event replay will also be available at no cost via www.ngwsd-mn.com/2023-event.
Prior to starting her role at Pioneer PBS in 2021, Lamke worked at Twin Cities PBS where she worked closely with the University of Minnesota’s Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport. She used data from the Tucker Center to create three documentaries that have all been nominated for regional Emmys. Her documentary, “Media Coverage and Female Athletes,” won an Upper Midwest Emmy in the Sports Documentary category in 2015.
In January of 2021, Lamke accepted the president and general manager position at Pioneer PBS, an award-winning, viewer-supported public television station dedicated to sharing local stories of the region with the world. Throughout her career, Lamke has used her skills as a leader and storyteller to share the stories of women and girls in sport. Her dedication has helped raise awareness for equity in women’s sports as well as the stories and accomplishments of female athletes in Minnesota and beyond.
Seventeen individuals and groups were selected to be honored during the National Girls & Women in Sports Day – Minnesota. Other award categories include Breaking Barriers Award, The Wilma Rudolph Courage Award, The Marie Berg Education Award among others.

National Girls & Women in Sports Day was initiated by the Women's Sports Foundation to advocate for sports equity. NGWSD-MN builds public awareness of girls and women in sports by recognizing those who have worked to make Title IX a reality and achieve equity in sports at all levels. The mission of the event is to advocate for Title IX by celebrating and commemorating Minnesota individuals and organizations that inspire the participation of girls and women in sports and to increase the awareness of Minnesota girls and women in sport through advocacy and recognition.
