GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — On the next Compass program, learn about how Viking Speedway and the United States Postal Service are reorganizing and thinking about the future. This special will air Thursday, May 14 at 9 p.m. and will rebroadcast on Sunday, May 17 at 12:30 p.m. It will be viewable online at www.pioneer.org/compass after the original airing.

Amanda Anderson from Pioneer PBS talks with USPS employees Nicole Hill, acting strategic communications specialist based in St. Paul, and Jeremy Runholt, rural mail carrier based in Granite Falls. USPS has more than 11,200 employees in the state of Minnesota and is a crucial service for many rural Minnesotans and Americans.

Dan Kalina is the secretary and treasurer of Viking Speedway based in Alexandria. “I’m a financial advisor by day, I’ve been doing it for 15 years, and in a normal year, this is the toughest business model I’ve ever seen. So what’s going on right now makes things a lot more difficult.” However, Kalina speculates that, because Viking Speedway is an outdoor venue, the likelihood of reopening soon is greater than indoor sporting and entertainment venues.

Native nonprofit Dakota Wicohan was recently featured on Compass to explain how the organization is rethinking how to provide their cultural programming. Gianna and Butchie Eastman provide a video check-in about how they’re connecting to the youth and community they serve.

The Horse Relative is a new hour long documentary from Pioneer PBS in partnership with artists James Star Comes Out and Keith Braveheart of the Oglala Lakota tribe of South Dakota and Dakota Wicohan. Compass will air a short trailer of the documentary which airs on Sunday, May 17 at 6 p.m.

Viewers with story ideas and issues they would like to see discussed on Compass are encouraged to contact Pioneer PBS via email at yourtv@pioneer.org or call the station at 1-800-726-3178.
