GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — Pioneer PBS’s Postcards program will feature stories about Grand Forks, North Dakota based artist Pieper Bloomquist and Madison Minnesota based local theater champion Carmen Fernholz to be broadcast on Thursday, February 10 at 7 p.m. The episode will be rebroadcast on Sunday, February 13 at 7 p.m. and on Monday, February 14 at 1:30 p.m. The stories will also be available for online viewing through the station’s website: www.pioneer.org/postcards and YouTube Channel.

Pieper Bloomquist has devoted her life to mastering the Swedish Folk arts of story painting known as Dalmålning and bonadsmålning. Pieper got her start in the art form by taking lessons from Karen Jenson of Milan and Judith Kjenstad of Minneapolis. Today she is in high demand as an artist who can work with residents in elder care facilities doing large medieval style paintings that illuminate their stories. ”I have a painting career today because I have found a way to take these traditional motifs, processes and materials and tell modern stories.” Bloomquist says.

Carmen Fernholz is a director at the Prairie Arts Center in Madison and over the past 40 years he has directed more than 60 community theater plays. The Postcards crew caught up with him as he was preparing to put on a play about Lac qui Parle County’s Sesquicentennial. Fernholz also shares the story about how he became an organic farmer, how he is still innovating with new crop development and how the transition of ownership of his farm to another family's farm will keep the sustainable agriculture movement, which he helped pioneer, going strong.
