GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — On the next Compass program, learn about how Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota is rethinking its retail operations and job training assistance and how to plan for retirement amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The special will air Thursday, May 7 at 9 p.m. and will rebroadcast on Sunday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m. It will be viewable online at www.pioneer.org/compass after the original airing.

Amanda Anderson from Pioneer PBS talks with Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota’s Shelly Huseby, workforce development manager, and Nick Adams, senior director of retail stores. Huseby talks about how the company’s job training arm is helping people in rural areas—many with subpar broadband access—with Zoom interviews and online job applications in new ways. Adams explains how the company is preparing their retail locations to reopen with contactless donations.

Michelle Full of Marshall works for Bremer Bank and manages retirement plans and helps people plan for retirement. She talks with Anderson about how this pandemic-fueled recession compares to the Great Recession of 2007 and what aid is available from the CARES Act for retirees and people close to retirement.

Julie Buntjer and Leah Ward, reporters from The Globe in Worthington, recently joined Anderson on Facebook Live to talk about their coverage of the closure of the JBS pork processing plant in Worthington—the largest employer in Worthington. Buntjer has been following the impact this has on the farmers bringing their hogs to the plant and Ward has been reporting on how it is affecting the plant workers.

Finally, Kyle Klausing, editor of the Granite Falls Advocate Tribune, talks about his experience working for a small newspaper and the importance of local journalism in the latest installment of The View From Here.
