GRANITE FALLS, Minn.Fishing for catfish on the Minnesota River, a record sturgeon caught on the St. Croix and the Minnesota PCA’s campaign to replace lead with nontoxic fishing tackle will be featured on the next Prairie Sportsman. “Flatheads and Get the Lead Out” will air on Pioneer PBS Sunday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. For air dates and times on all Minnesota PBS stations, go to prairiesportsman.org

Host Bret Amundson is on the Minnesota River with guide Darren Troseth, owner of 3 Rivers Fishing Adventures, fishing for channel and flathead catfish near the Twin Cities. In Minnesota it can take 25 years for flatheads to grow to trophy size, and weights of up to 70 pounds have been recorded. We also see Troseth catch a record-setting 78-inch sturgeon ice fishing on the St. Croix River in February 2019. Troseth had to call on friends to help auger a larger hole to get the fish through the ice.

In the next segment, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency promotes its “Get the Lead Out” campaign to replace lead fishing tackle with non-toxic varieties. The campaign’s logo features the common loon, which picks up small rocks to help grind and digest its food. Lead sinkers can be mistaken for rocks and will cause weight loss and even death. The MPCA is promoting alternatives such as stainless steel and tungsten sinkers that are as effective as lead.
