Stories feature artists from Rochester, Battle Lake and Appleton

 

GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — On Thursday, April 14 Pioneer PBS will release new Postcards stories about singer-songwriter Drew Barbes, the husband and wife duo of Blue Red Roses and professional musician, composer and band leader Doug Woolverton. The stories will be available for online viewing starting at noon through the station’s website, www.pioneer.org/postcards, and Postcard’s YouTube Channel. The program will be aired over the Pioneer PBS broadcast network on April 14 at 7 p.m.

Drew Barbes was born and raised in Rochester. He sings and plays guitar with the band The Morning Kings which tours through Minnesota and the Upper Midwest with its high energy mix of alt-rock tunes. Barbes’ Greek and German heritage is important to him for the grounding it provides as he works from his home studio, waiting to get “hit by lightning” with a new song or lyric.

Daniel and Mary Olson from Blue Red Roses

 

Daniel and Mary Olson form the core of the band Blue Red Roses based in Battle Lake. Mary is a classically trained musician whereas Daniel is largely self-taught. Together, they write and perform both original songs and covers for audiences at breweries and wineries of the lake country region. “I think that music is in everyone. It connects everybody and adds rhythm to life,” said Daniel. “Music has never let go of me,” he added.

Doug Woolverton is a Grammy-nominated trumpet player who has performed with Victor Wainwright and the Train; Beginnings, a Chicago Tribute band; the Shari Puorto band; and the Bender Brass. He was in high school when his family moved from Trenton, New Jersey to Appleton, Minnesota where he graduated in 1999.  There, he and his father the Rev. Paul Woolverton created a local jazz band that performed regularly in the west central region. After attending college in Aberdeen, Woolverton went on to play trumpet and lead bands at a global level, often performing as many as 280 times a year. He still returns to the Appleton area occasionally and the Pioneer PBS Postcards team caught up with him there for this story.
