GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — Pioneer PBS’s Prairie Sportsman will feature archery in schools, blue-green algae discovered in pristine wilderness areas and foraging for milkweed pods on its upcoming episode. “Bows and Beyond” will air on Sunday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. on Pioneer PBS.
“Schools on Target” features the national champion archery team at Lakes International Language Academy. The Forest Lake charter school started its archery program in 2011 with only a small group of students. Now its competitive middle and high school teams are taking top places in regional, state and national tournaments. The National Archery in the Schools Program has put bows in the hands of more than 18 million students. The program’s goal is to change lives one arrow at a time as students learn focus, self-control, discipline and patience.
Then, in “Toxic Blooms,” researchers have discovered cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae, in northern Minnesota’s pristine wilderness areas. The aquatic plant, which produces toxic blooms harmful to animals, typically shows up in waters polluted with nutrient runoff. However, the plant was recently discovered in Isle Royale National Park, a protected island on Lake Superior, and researchers at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station are trying to figure out why.
Finally, forager Nicole Zempel shows how to sustainably harvest milkweed pods, a pollinator-friendly plant that is the sole food source for monarch caterpillars. Zempel transforms toxic raw milkweed into a versatile, delicious ingredient reminiscent of broccoli, asparagus and Brussels sprouts.
