Special screening event to be held in Granite Falls

 

GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — On Thursday, April 21, Pioneer PBS will release new Postcards stories about the Bluenose Gopher Public House in Granite Falls and an elite platoon of Marines who fought in the Pacific Theater of WWII. The stories will be available for online viewing starting at noon through the station’s website, www.pioneer.org/postcards, and Postcard’s YouTube Channel. The program will be aired over the Pioneer PBS broadcast network on April 21 at 7 p.m. 

Bluenose Gopher Public House is a cooperative organization with a craft beer tap room, local wine bar, live music venue and idea factory.  Founded in 2019, the cooperative’s mission is to “create a space where community, creativity, and history collide with quality beverages and food.” A special, free sneak preview screening of the Bluenose story will be held prior to the broadcast on April 21 at the Bluenose Gopher Public House in Granite Falls from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Battle of Saipan was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on the island of Saipan from June 15 to July 9, 1944. It has been referred to as "Pacific D-Day.” The bloody battle resulted in allowing U.S. planes to be based within bombing range of Japan. Postcards interviewed Joseph Tachovsky, a graduate of University of Minnesota and the son of Frank Tachovsky, who was the commanding officer of a platoon of Marine Scout-Snipers known as the 40 Thieves of Saipan. Tachovsky drew upon his father’s memoirs and interviews with the soldiers who served under him to write the book 40 Thieves on Saipan: The Elite Marine Scout-Snipers in One of World War II’s Bloodiest Battles.
