Hello Newsroom Heroes!

Welcome to the second edition of News You Can Use, designed to help support local media across the Pioneer PBS viewing area. Each edition includes free, publication-ready content you can use in print, online or on-air. Our goal is simple: provide quality regional content that may be useful to your newsroom while highlighting the people, places and stories that make our communities unique. Use whatever fits your publication or station - there’s no cost or obligation. If there are resources or story types you’d like to see included, I’d welcome your feedback.

In this edition of News You Can Use, we are featuring the story behind a new Pioneer PBS Documentary, Wacipi produced by local indigenous writer, director and producer Sinte Nupa. The documentary premieres September 17.

The earth itself hums seismic waves | Wacipi

Produced by Indigenous writer, director and producer Sinte Nupa, Wacipi explores the history, traditions and living culture of Pow Wows through the voices of those who know them best. Wacipi premieres on Pioneer PBS September 17th.

Pow Wows happen because of singers and their drums | Wacipi

In this clip from Wacipi, you’ll hear why singers and the drum are at the center of every gathering. Wacipi premieres on Pioneer PBS September 17th.

We are also highlighting a vital program that has been airing for many years that begins again September 10. Meet the Candidates highlights candidates running for Senate and the House. With many new faces this election season, this is expected to be an important asset for voters to meet the new candidates and find out what they have to bring to the table.

Additionally, and not time specific at all, we are featuring free resources for parents on the PBS KIDS for Parents website.

Included in the files are photographs, pre-written social media posts you can easily copy/paste to share your website article links online, the human interest style stories, as well as links and QR codes for related content.

Best,

For many people a powwow is something they have heard about but never experienced. Questions about what it is, what the dances represent and whether everyone is welcome can leave people curious but hesitant to attend. Those are exactly the questions indigenous writer, director and producer Sinte Nupa hopes to answer through Wacipi, a new Pioneer PBS documentary that offers viewers an introduction to the beauty, traditions and welcoming spirit of powwow.

Meet the Candidates features one-on-one interviews in which every candidate is asked the same four open-ended questions. The questions ask candidates why they are seeking office, what their priorities are for the upcoming legislative session, their vision for Minnesota’s future and what unique perspective they would bring to the Legislature. For many viewers the series will offer their first opportunity to see those candidates and hear directly from them before heading to the polls.
