GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — A concert featuring the music of Olav Luksengård Mjelva, is being held on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Danish American Center at 3030 West River Parkway in Minneapolis. The concert is being sponsored by the Twin Cities Scandinavian Social Dance with Renee Vaughan and Carol Sersland as well as by Pioneer PBS. Early arrivals can enter the doors at 6:30 p.m. to make their way into their seats. Olav will first perform on the solo fiddle and hardingfele with dancing to follow at 8 to 9 p.m. Interested concert-goers can pay at the door. Admission is $10 – cash only. Olav Luksengård Mjelva is a musician, dancer, producer and recording artist that comes from Røros in the Sør- Trøndelag region of Norway. He picked up the fiddle at seven and years later started playing the hardanger fiddle. He typically performs with a variety of constellations, most notably SVER, The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc which is a trio that specializes in Norwegian, Swedish and Shetland fiddle music and also the Rydvall/Mjelva duo alongside Swedish Nyckelharpa player Erik Rydvall. More recently, Olav has had his music featured in the hit Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022).
Pioneer PBS has previously featured Olav in a Pioneer PBS special titled The Devil’s Instrument (20220). The film explores the culture surrounding the Hardanger fiddle and interviews woodworkers who make the fiddle, the musicians who play it and the dancers who spin to it against the backdrop of the gorgeous Norwegian landscape. Olav will also perform in Grand Marais on Friday November 18 at noon at the world premiere of "Built with Love" a new feature-length documentary by the award-winning Pioneer PBS Postcards.
