GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — The Devil’s Instrument is a new documentary by Pioneer PBS producer Dana Conroy featuring videography by Ben Dempcy and Kristofor Gieske captured during a 10-day trip to Norway in August 2019. Edited by Kevin Russell, the documentary explores the history, lore, craft and haunting music of the Hardanger fiddle and the dances that accompany it as they are practiced in present day Norway. On Sunday, February 2 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. there will be an opportunity to meet the producer and videographers and to see the documentary before it is broadcast at the Grand Theatre at 310 6th Ave in Madison. The event is free. For more information visit www.pioneer.org

The Devil’s Instrumentwas the name given to the fiddle by some religious leaders in 19th century Norway who thought there was no place in the church for such an instrument since it was used for weddings, dances and gatherings where alcohol and merriment ensued. The documentary interviews woodworkers who make the fiddle, the musicians who play it and the dancers who spin to it amidst the backdrop of the gorgeous Norwegian landscape.

The broadcast premiere of The Devil’s Instrument will be on Thursday, February 13 at 7 p.m. on Pioneer PBS.
