GRANITE FALLS, Minn. —  Coming up on Prairie Sportsman: Ian Ives, an army sergeant who lost an arm in Afghanistan, is presented with a custom-made rod and reel, and at The Raptor Center, an eagle is being examined after it was hit by a car.  “In Service and Healing” airs on Pioneer PBS  Sunday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m.

U.S. Army Sergeant Ian Ives was seriously injured in October 2019 when an IED exploded while he was on duty in Afghanistan. He was flown to Walter Reed Bethesda where his right arm was amputated and he lost vision in his right eye. Last year, Kris and Justin Anderson of Lake Crystal, Minn. presented Ian with a custom-made rod and reel that can be operated with one hand. It belonged to Kris’s late father who had a stroke following a car accident that caused paralysis on his right side. They connected to Ian through Isaac Jensen of The Fallen Outdoors who took Ian fishing on Mille Lacs Lake with his new rod and reel.

Next, at The Raptor Center in St. Paul, an eagle is being examined after it was hit by a car. X-rays showed internal trauma and the eagle was rehabilitated and released six weeks later.

The Raptor Center was co-founded by U of M College of Veterinary Medicine professors Patrick Redig and Gary Duke who started treating injured birds in the 1970s. Staff quickly realized that raptors, which were unable to be released back into the wild, could become effective educational “ambassadors,” making appearances at schools, fairs and festivals.
