Marshall Pride

GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — The August edition of Pioneer PBS’s public affairs program Compass features Marshall's first Pride celebration, respite care services and the colorful crosswalks in Granite Falls. This program will air Thursday, August 12 at 9 p.m. and will be viewable online at www.pioneer.org/compass after the original airing. Viewers are encouraged to visit Compass on Facebook and YouTube to give feedback on the stories.

In many cities, Pride has been celebrated for decades. Now, Marshall has added its name to the list of places holding an annual Pride festival. They celebrated their first Pride on June 27 and Compass’ Southwest Minnesota State University student correspondent, Isatu Shirek, was there to cover it.

Compass has been working on a series of stories about programs in southwest Minnesota designed to help people age with dignity. In this personal story, Kurt Hoehne talks about how his family have used respite care services at Home Front First in Montevideo. Funding for this series is provided by the Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging.

Granite Falls has thought up a creative way to promote pedestrian safety: paint beautifully colorful crosswalks through the city. This next segment looks at how the crosswalk idea came to be, features some crosswalks artists and shows some of the Upper Sioux Art Walk, the first Upper Sioux-hosted event in Granite Falls that toured each of the crosswalks.

Viewers with story ideas and issues they would like to see discussed on Compass are encouraged to contact Pioneer PBS via email at yourtv@pioneer.org or call the station at 1-800-726-3178.
