GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — The April edition of Pioneer PBS’s reformatted public affairs program Compass features stories about recovery and growth after grief, the Riverview Estates living development project in Dawson and an episode of Undowanpi (We Sing). This program will air Thursday, April 8 at 9 p.m. and will be viewable online at www.pioneer.org/compass after the original airing. Viewers are encouraged to visit Compass on Facebook and YouTube to give feedback on the stories.

While grieving the death of her son, Dr. Kandy Noles Stevens, an assistant professor of education at Southwest Minnesota State University, turned to writing. Through this process she learned how to be a more empathetic educator for her students. She advocates that, especially now with distance learning, students are not alone when they need help. This story was produced by Isatu Shirek, a student correspondent from SMSU. To learn more about contributing to Compass, contact yourtv@pioneer.org.

Kelly Asche from the Center for Rural Research and Policy explained that although the population has been steadily declining for the past 50 years in many rural areas, there has been an increase in the number of households—likely due to smaller household sizes. In 2016, Ken Club, Charlie Prestholdt and Lee Gunderson, recognized this need for more affordable housing in Dawson. They gathered a number of private investors and created the Riverview Estates living development. Also, hear from Doc and Sharon Skordahl, both retired, who were one of the first to purchase a Riverview Estates lot.

The final segment features Gabriel Desrosiers, lead singer of Northern Wind, from Northwest Angle 33 First Nation. Learn how song changed Desrosiers’ life and the importance it plays in his role as a teacher at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Desrosiers was interviewed for a project by Pioneer PBS’s Tanner Peterson, highlighting what traditional song and drum means to four different Native artists.
