GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — Pioneer PBS’s Postcards will feature Carl’s Bakery in Granite Falls and the art of co-owner Dale Streblow. The episode will also highlight painter Jenny Field’s garden-based art studio in Fergus Falls. This program will air on Thursday, February 16 at 7 p.m.
Located in the heart of downtown Granite Falls, Carl’s Bakery has been responsible for the sweet smells of doughnuts, breads and other baked goods since 1957. Originally opened by the husband and wife team of Carl and Nancy Aus, the bakery remains a family business in the hands of Joshua and Randi Streblow. Three generations of the Streblow family operate the business on a day to day basis, with their nine children and other relatives helping out. Carl’s also now offers produce from the Streblow’s regenerative farm in addition to the classic baked delights for which the bakery on Prentice Street is known.
Just inside the front door of Carl’s is a collection of fellow co-owner Dale Streblow’s artwork. Streblow was always interested in pursuing art as a career, but the practical reality of needing to provide for his family led him to other ventures until more recent years. Inspired by the work of old masters and the likes of famed illustrator Norman Rockwell, Streblow’s paintings and sculptures reflect his values and sense of humor.
Then, step into Jenny Field’s light-filled studio in Underwood, where inspiration meets history. Located in the Fergus Falls area, it is out of this place that she creates paintings of plants, animals and other natural scenes with her signature bold color palette. Field’s artist profile for the Lake Region Arts Council explains that her collective work is “intended to stir a visual dialogue about human emotion, evoked through a spectrum of color and subject matter.”
