GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — The public is invited to attend a special free event at the Renville Community Center on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 3 to 6 p.m. "Story, Family, Land and Tradition on the Yellowstone Trail" will feature authors, films, music, art and presentations featuring the Dakota culture of Minnesota and South Dakota. Free food catered by Dave's Place will be available to all who attend. RSVP's are requested by visiting pioneer.org/renville or calling 800-726-3178.
The three-hour event will be organized like an Open House where attendees can come and go as they please and choose to attend some or all of the scheduled events.
Throughout the afternoon starting at 3 p.m. there will be food and refreshments catered by Dave’s Place in Renville. Dakota Artist Beth O’Keefe of Morton will be displaying her traditional Dakota artwork and tanned deerskin hides. Contemporary artist John Sterner of Marshall will be showcasing his paintings and multi-media creations. Various organizations from the Renville Community will have tables set up to talk with event goers about their organizations. Several short videos that Pioneer PBS has made featuring local Dakota artists will be showing all afternoon. Musician Hunter Peterson of Renville will be playing contemporary guitar and keyboard music to provide atmosphere for the event.
At 4 p.m. a formal program will begin with a presentation by authors Watler “Super” LaBatte Jr. of Granite Falls and Teresa Peterson of Belview. They will be talking about their new book “Voices from Pejuhutazizi: Dakota Stories and Storytellers.” Signed copies of the book will be available for sale at the event.
At 4:30 p.m. Pioneer PBS will present the documentary “Saksanica” about traditional Dakota women's dress making. Producer Leya Hale of Twin Cities Public Television and Videographer and Editor Tanner Peterson of Pioneer PBS will be present to answer questions about the film and their collaborative work.
From 5 to 6 p.m. there will be informal visiting with the many co-sponsors of the event. Co-sponsors include the Renville Museum, Friends of the Arts, the Renville Lions Club, the Yellowstone Trail Alliance of Western Minnesota, The Yes! House, Dakota Wicohan, Park Moms of Renville and the Renville Events Committee.
