Dakotafire is advancing new ways to blend online interactive content through a website and town hall meetings with traditional print reporting distributed through several small town newspapers in South Dakota. Funds to get Dakotafire up and running were initially provided by private foundations, but now it operates as an Limited Liability Corporation.
MinnPost is a nonprofit strictly online newspaper founded in 2007. It is based in Minneapolis and focuses on Minnesota news. It too was started with a combination of foundation and private sector funding and it employs many former print journalists as contributing writers. MinnPost is actively seeking members who agree to make contributions to support the news service, much in the same way that viewers and listeners support public television and radio.
