When the Call Comes was produced and edited by Mike Cihak, Director of Instructional and Media Technologies for the University of Minnesota Morris and written and researched by David Ericksen, faculty member in English at UMM. According to Cihak, When the Call Comes is the story of how the volunteers of the Morris Fire Department have served not only as firefighters, but also as first-responders in a broad range of situations. The story follows the changing equipment as fire departments evolved from lines of citizens with buckets of water to today’s modern trucks and protective gear. “It is also about how a community of immigrants learned to work together,” said Cihak. “And in working together they have built an institution that characterizes the best of small-town America,” he added.
