Pioneer’s Compass producer, Laura Kay Prosser, takes viewers to Fergus Falls’ Lakes Country Service Cooperative (LCSC) to learn about how their Fresh Connect Food Hub works with regional growers and institutional food service buyers to bring fresh, locally-grown foods into the community. Jeanine Bowman, Food Service Director for Morris & Benson Schools and Jeremy Kovash, Executive Director of the LCSC are interviewed for this story.
Back at the Pioneer studios in Appleton, General Manager Les Heen has a round table discussion about regional food-coop trends with Arne Kildegaard, Board Member with Pomme de Terre Foods in Morris.
For the Compass Literature Corner, Prosser interviews author Forrest Peterson of Willmar, Minnesota about his novel "Buffalo Ridge." The realistic western Minnesota characters in Peterson’s book grapple with conventional versus organic farming practices, engage as a family and a community in a struggle against meth dealers, the child welfare bureaucracy and hardship.
