Pioneer Public Television has added two new full time employees this past week:  Angela Zinda and Laura Kay Prosser.  The hires are part of a strategic plan being implemented by the 49-year-old non-profit educational television company to increase member services in the five-state region served by the station’s broadcast and satellite signal.

New Member Services Coordinator Angela Zinda has lived in Appleton since 1983 when she moved to town as a high school student and worked at Hoppe’s Hardware -- the family business.  Zinda is the mother of four and has worked in Retail and Customer Service all her life. Most recently she worked for a ground source heat pump manufacturer, ECONAR GeoSystems LLC, for more than ten years before it closed.  “I am really excited to be here,” Zinda said.  “You can feel the excitement in the building as Pioneer nears our 50th year and the growth that is coming from the expansion of our signal to Dish and DirecTV in eastern Minnesota and Wisconsin,” she added.

Producer Laura Kay Prosser was born in Crystal, Minnesota and received a B.A. in English Literature and Journalism from the University of Minnesota Duluth.  Most recently she worked as the Lifestyles Editor for the Greenwood Mississippi Commonwealth and was co-editor of the Clara City Herald and the Raymond Prinsburg News.  While at the Herald, Prosser earned first and second place prizes for her stories in the Arts & Entertainment category in the 2013 Minnesota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Competition.

Prosser will be working to develop and launch a new public affairs program for Pioneer Public TV.  “The opportunity to use video to tell community based stories of importance to the region is absolutely thrilling for me, “ said Prosser.  “It definitely feels like this is where I am supposed to be,” she added.

Pioneer’s broadcast signal serves an area comprising more than 45 rural counties in western and southwestern Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas.  Satellite TV viewers can view the station from western Wisconsin in the east to the Missouri River in the west.  There are more than 3 million potential viewers in Pioneer’s viewing area. In the past few years, the station has distinguished itself as an award winning storyteller on behalf of the small towns and farming communities of the Upper Midwest.   For more information, call 1-800 726-3178 or email yourtv@pioneer.org.

Pioneer Custom Productions Serve the Region

6/10/2015

You might think it is enough for a small town public television station to produce 6 local programs (Your Legislators, Prairie Yard and Garden, Funtime Polka, Postcards, Grassland Jam, On Stage) and broadcast local candidate debates during election years.  But Pioneer also works with local nonprofits, educational institutions and communities to produce custom videos that serve to inform, connect and inspire the region.

In the past eight months, Pioneer has worked with regional partners to produce 3 custom video programs:
Picture
“Minnesota Rural Nonprofits Give to the Max” was produced and broadcast in November, 2014 to coincide with the statewide Give to the Max Day that encourages Minnesotans to donate online to their favorite nonprofit organization.  The program was produced with the support of and cooperation with the Southwest Initiative Foundation, the West Central Initiative, United Way organizations in Douglas, Pope and Ottertail Counties, the Lakes Country Service Cooperative and the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. The special half hour program raised awareness about all the essential work that the rural nonprofit sector does all year long.  It is viewable online at http://video.pioneer.org/video/2365367947.

Farmers Lead the Way: Climate and Agriculture in Southwest Minnesota was recorded using Pioneer’s new mobile studio in March, 2015 at the University of Minnesota Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton, Minnesota.  The program presented the latest research documenting how shifts in the Upper Midwest’s climate are affecting the way we farm.  The special hour long program was produced with the support and cooperation of the U of M Extension Southwest Regional Sustainable Development Partnership and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.  It is viewable online at: http://video.pioneer.org/video/2365479104/.

Southwest Minnesota: Come for the Jobs, Stay for the Lifestyle  is a six minute regional recruitment video that features newcomers touting the virtues of small town life in southwestern Minnesota.  It was produced with the cooperation and support of the Southwest Minnesota Workforce Council. The video has been posted to several web sites and is being shown in Hennepin County, Minnesota to job seekers considering a move to the region.  It is viewable online at: https://youtu.be/ttmWR8nKZ5k.

Poldark Screening Coming to Worthington Center for Active Living June 11

The first episode of the new seven-part classic romance on PBS: POLDARK ON MASTERPIECE will be shown in a special sneak preview screening event to be held on Thursday, June 11 with the screening beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the Center for Active Living at 211 11th St in Worthington, Minnesota. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and participants are invited to come early and enjoy free appetizers and refreshments. Pioneer Public Television is co-sponsoring the event in cooperation with Compassionate Care Hospice, Minnesota West Community and Technical College and the Center for Active Living.  The event is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Nicole Zempel, Pioneer Public TV Community Relations Representative at  320-212-3945.

British comedies and dramas continue to hold court Sunday nights on PBS: POLDARK ON MASTERPIECE is a swashbuckling new adaptation of the iconic hit series that premieres nationwide on June 21 at 9:00 p.m. on Pioneer. The re-imagined saga stars Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) as the dashing squire Ross Poldark and includes original “Poldark” protagonist Robin Ellis as Reverend Halse.

Poldark is based on a beloved series of novels by Winston Graham. The first, Ross Poldark, was published in 1945; the last, Bella Poldark, appeared in 2002, the year before Graham’s death.  All twelve novels trace the fortunes of a landed, mine-owning family in windswept Cornwall two centuries ago.

Almost 40 years ago Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the TV screens of millions of PBS viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hit series. Now the gallant captain rides again in a thrilling new version with all the action, adventure, and romance of the original, plus even more spectacular Cornish scenery and rousing local color.  The first episode of the series will begin as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War, discovers that his father is dead, his lands are ruined and his true love is about to marry his first cousin.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this sneak preview screening to the Worthington community in partnership with some fantastic local organizations,” said Zempel.  “There is only one of these special screenings happening in our viewing area which covers parts of 5 states, and the energy to host such an event is alive and well in Worthington,” she added.
