How does one collect native grass seed? Can you get paid to do that?
At Morning Sky Greenery, we hand collect native seeds on land we have permission to enter as needed. You really have to know your plants and when the seeds are ready and viable, so you need to go back time and again as the seeds get ready. You need to establish a market for the seeds in order to get paid. Minnesota has strict seed laws, which may require you to test the germination for the seed as well if you are selling the seed. We also try to be good stewards and leave some of the seed for wildlife and to propagate the species as to not decrease or mine the species from an area. So, lots to know! There are some companies who have fields of native species, and they have mechanical harvesting equipment to do those plots.
