Country
Spires

Episode One: Resisting the Melting Pot

Elegant steeples, dotting the Upper Midwest's countryside, pierce our curiosity. What drove the churches' builders from their homelands to this cold and lonely territory? Country Spires' first episode explores immigrant groups, each clinging to its own ethnic heritage and religious doctrine. Some immigrant-built churches can be found today in their original condition.

Episode Two: Hidden Gems

Country Spires' second episode guides viewers through church architecture, from the simple to the extraordinary, and reveals the divine lessons intended by certain floorplans, colors and symbols. From Orthodox onion domes to soaring steeples, the rich diversity of Old and New World architecture adds adventure to the investigation of country churches.

Episode Three: Saving the Steeples

In the midst of America's unprecedented prosperity, rural farms and communities are facing rapid economic decline. As 19th century churches are abandoned or torn down, we lose important pieces of our cultural heritage. There are heroes among us; however, leading efforts to save these tucked away sanctuaries. Country Spires' final episode looks at the destiny of country churches and how they can be preserved.
