The heritage is as old as our state and is in no way diminished by time. The upper Midwest today is still an area that marks its seasons by the string of opening days from fishing opener to the deer openings, we mark the years and pass on the heritage to the others – the sons and daughters who will carry on the outdoor lifestyle for all of us.

Passing the outdoors to the next generation

Prairie Sportsman espouses the outdoors lifestyle that we feel must be passed on to the next generation. Our mission is to try to pass on a way of life that sustains us and relieves our stress to the next generation. It is also our aim to encourage families to experience the outdoors together as we did.

About Rich Massey, host of Prairie Sportsman

Rich Massey, is a seasoned outdoorsman who brings forty plus years of experience to every assignment. Rich has been field editor for Minnesota Sportsman magazine and has written for Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, and many other outdoor publications. Rich and his wife Sue have raised two sons on the prairies where the Massey family has lived for over a hundred years.

Feature Segments

Prairie Sportsman will explore unique and interesting stories throughout the area. Minnesota Made features will showcase some of the businesses that produce quality products that many of us may not be aware are actually made in our own neighborhood. Relive the past in our Nostalgia segments and see some of the photos from the days gone by. Viewers can become part of Prairie Sportsman by submitting photos or home video to be included in the weekly segments. Questions can be submitted and answers will be given by DNR officials when we include this part for our viewers to participate. Kids become Prairie Pals when they get involved in the many features of the outdoors and join in the adventure and education that is available to explore.

Behind the Scenes

Prairie Sportsman was a success in the past because of our team working the cameras and in the edit suites. Modern day technology brings high resolution acquisition with digital video and non-linear editing equipment.

The Lodge

You will get a trip each week to the old hunting lodge where Rich will greet you at the door with a cup of coffee. You will come in each week and sit down by the fire and watch Rich introduce the stories. We believe your visits will soon become a habit and we think you'lll agree that sitting down and talking about the outdoors with an old pal is great therapy for you and your whole family.
