Although I cover stories on artists, I have never really thought I had any natural artistic ability. But as wine and paint nights have gotten more popular and frequent, I thought, “Hey if other people can do it, why can’t I?” After I heard that two of the talented artists I have had the privilege to record on Postcards were going to be teaming up to teach painting classes, I was sold. So I signed up for their first available time in my home town of Morris this last Saturday, October 25th.
We had a small but humble group, four of us to be exact. Leanne Larson, a native of Australia who now lives in Garfield, taught us how to paint a recreation of Van Gogh's famous “Starry Night” while Rikki Sneddon, another gifted artist from Glenwood, listened to instruction and painted along as though she was learning too. Whenever someone would make a negative comment about her own painting, Leanne would remind us that we were all doing well and to keep painting and believe in ourselves.
The sun kept shining on us and obscuring the visibility to paint on our canvases but everyone was enjoying it too much to complain and shut the blinds. So we continued sipping our warm coffee and took in the extra heat of the sun without a care in the world. In the end, we all painted a beautiful take on Van Gogh's painting. Since I love yellow so much, I had to add a little bit more at the end, even though we were not told to do so, turning mine into a sort of extra bright starry night. That’s what’s wonderful about taking a painting class. Instructors like Leanne and Rikki show you the steps, but everyone has the freedom to add their own personal style and flair.
ART BAR 39 is the name of the company that Leanne and Rikki recently started. They have painting nights across central Minnesota including the towns of Alexandria, Morris and Glenwood. If coffee isn’t your thing, they do a lot of wine and painting nights and also have classes for kids. Their enthusiasm, talent, and encouragement teaches us that there’s an artist in every one of us. I know they helped me discover my inner artist.
