“It is our local programs that set us apart, “ said Schwarz. “I really find the work to be fulfilling,” she added. “Piecing together the puzzle of our schedule is a challenge I enjoy.”
One of the benefits that Schwarz likes about her job is the ability to travel to national PBS meetings to meet with other Program Directors and learn about all the new programs available to the station. “One thing you learn at these meetings is that Pioneer is doing a lot of things right,“ said Schwarz. “It gives me satisfaction to know that Pioneer is keeping up with the times.”
Schwarz’s favorite national PBS programs are Frontline and Masterpiece. She describes the atmosphere of working at the TV station as being like a “circus.” Around the office Schwarz is known for her attention to detail and her expressive sayings that add humor to the work day.
“Shirley has worked at Pioneer for 25 years, and the station has been around for 48 years,” said Pioneer’s President and General manager Les Heen. “It is great to have her dedicated service for such a long part of Pioneer’s history.”
