Pioneer producers and videographers Dana Johnson, Kristofor Gieske and Ben Dempcy collaborated on the winning programs which feature stories about an artist and historians from Pipestone and Murray County. Both productions were featured on Postcards, Pioneer’s weekly art, culture and history program showcasing the people and communities of western and southwestern Minnesota.
Town Ball: A Forgotten History won an award in the Historic/Cultural/Nostalgic – Single Story category. It tells the story of black baseball phenome John Donaldson and small town baseball leagues through interviews with Janet Timmerman, Museums Coordinator for Murray County in Slayton, and Minnesota baseball historians Peter Gorton and Frank White.
Captured in Silver also won an award Historic/Cultural/Nostalgic – Single Story category and featuresDavid Rambow (formerly of Pipestone) who has revived the tricky and painstaking process of wet plate photography to make rich, handmade photographs.
“It is very rare for entries from a production team to be chosen for more than one award in a given category,” said Pioneer Senior Postcards Producer Dana Johnson. “We are lucky that the communities of western and southwestern Minnesota can provide us with so many interesting stories to tell, “ she added.
To discourage local favoritism, media professionals from other regions of the country choose the award winning entries, according to Johnson “This means that professionals in other regions of the country really are fascinated by the history, culture and people of the Pioneer Public TV viewing area,” Johnson explained. “It is an honor for us to be able to work together to tell these stories in new and interesting ways.”

All of the award winning programs were made possible by the voters of Minnesota thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
