The nominated programs feature stories about recent immigrants from the Micronesian Island of Chuuk to the town of Milan, a singer songwriter from Cokato who moves to Minneapolis, a glass blower from Vining, a pair of blacksmiths from Madison and a couple from Prinsburg who adopt two children from Haiti.
“There are great stories to be told here in rural Minnesota and Pioneer Public TV is honored to be able to tell them,’’ said General Manager Les Heen. “Thanks to our members, our dedicated staff and the exceptional people of this region, we are able to share the richness of rural living with the larger world.”

Hammer and Steel: A Story of the Forge: http://video.pioneer.org/video/2365243228 Nominated in the Lifestyle Feature Segment category, this eleven-minute story is about a love for history, fire and iron and the “passing of the torch” between blacksmith Gene Sandau and apprentice Nick Johnson at Nova Forge in Madison, Minnesota. It was produced by Dana Johnson with videography and editing by Kristofor Gieske.
My Way Back Home: Holly Hansen: http://www.pioneer.org/my-way-back-home.html Nominated in the Arts/Entertainment Program category, this 30-minute program from Pioneer’s My Way Back Home series follows singer-songwriter Holly Hansen on a musical journey through her small town past. Pioneer’s Dana Johnson is the program’s executive producer in collaboration with Dan Huiting as the director of photography and Kevin Russell as the editor.
Micronesian Culture in Milan: http://video.pioneer.org/video/2365173589 Nominated in the Documentary-Cultural category, this half-hour episode from Pioneer’s Postcards program tells the story of South Pacific islanders adapting to life in the Norwegian-American community of Milan, MN (population 369). Dana Johnson is the producer and Nick Gumm is the editor along with Ryan Thompson as Director of Photography with additional videography by Kristofor Gieske.
Shaping Glass With Fire: http://video.pioneer.org/video/2365207069 Nominated in the Lifestyle Feature Segment category, this eight-minute program takes viewers to the village of Vining, MN (population 78) where glass artist John Olesen shapes spectacular art objects with fire. It was produced by Dana Johnson with videography and editing by Ben Dempcy.
Haiti Love: http://video.pioneer.org/video/2365244418/ was nominated in the Documentary-Topical Documentary category. It traces the story of Jay and Kris TeBrake of rural Prinsburg as they adopt two girls from an orphanage in Haiti. Pioneer’s Senior Producer Dana Johnson produced and directed the documentary, Dan Huiting is the director of photography and Kevin Russell is the editor with additional videography by Kristofor Gieske.
