Holm originally grew up on a farm west of Strasburg, ND and yes, she is related to Lawrence Welk. She remembers the gardens of her youth at the farm and the large potato and sweet corn patches as well as the chickens, hogs, beef cattle, and milk cows. Holm went to college as NDSU and majored in Agriculture. There she met her future husband Tom and the two of them set about raising a family while working in the Ag education fields. Eventually the Holms moved to Morris where Mary works at Morning Sky Greenery.
“Working with plants teaches me -- I have learned from the native plants especially, “ said Holm. “I love doing this program because I get to learn and then share that with the viewing audience,” she added. As a lifelong educator about horticulture, Holm has extensive contacts in the industry and University Extension system in Minnesota and the Dakotas. For the 2015 PYG season, Holm took a visit to Target Field to learn about plant and water management at the Twins ballpark. She also created an episode on bees, honey and beekeeping from Steve Ellis of the Old Mill Honey Company located near Barrett, Minnesota.
Holm begins the 2015 season of PYG have Holm visiting the homes of former host Larry Zilliox near Alexandria and original host Sue Gooch near Morris. “We have such a long legacy going back with these hosts,” said PYG Producer Mike Cihak -- who is taking over for longtime producer Roger Boleman this year. “We know our viewers will enjoy seeing the baton being passed and we are thrilled with how Mary continues the tradition of bringing interesting programs highlighting the latest research and scientific knowledge to gardeners in the upper Midwest,” Cihak added.
